One of the things that really got me interested in live sound wasn’t just hanging around bands or partying with musicians. Sure, those moments happened, but there is an old reality in entertainment: even when you think you are simply attending the party, you are usually paying for it somehow.
Sometimes you pay with money.
Sometimes you pay with time.
Sometimes you pay by carrying thirty pounds of equipment up a ladder.
I happened to do all three.
To be clear, I was not hired to run audio for this particular event. I was hired to assist with the setup and make sure the equipment ended up where it was supposed to be. That sounds straightforward until you are the person climbing a ladder with a speaker or some other piece of equipment, getting it into position, plugging it in, and discovering that the cable is bad.
Then you climb back down.
You find another cable.
You climb back up.
While you are going back up, you secure the cable along the way so it is not hanging loose and flopping around in the wind.
Then, after all of that, you remember that the speakers are not weatherproof.
The practical solution used at the time was to place trash bags over them.
I am not claiming that was the finest example of professional weather protection ever developed. I am saying these were people who had been running events for decades, and this was how they had learned to keep the equipment functioning.
That was part of what made the entire operation interesting.
The property belonged to a family with resources that stretched back generations. It was one of those places where you quickly realized you were working on an entirely different scale from the average home or small business.
This was not simply a large house.
The property covered around a hundred acres, with approximately forty-five acres cleared. It included three houses, a meeting house, a museum, a bar, an indoor structure large enough to rival another house, and a maintenance building with a four-bay garage capable of swallowing an RV.
The equipment, however, represented several different generations of technology.
Some of it had clearly been maintained and reused for years. The mixing board itself dated back to the early 1990s. That did not automatically make it useless. Good equipment can remain functional for decades when it is maintained properly.
The larger problem was the infrastructure connecting everything.
The estate had a system for distributing audio to different locations around the property, and for its time, it was probably a fairly advanced arrangement. The trouble was that it still depended on buried conventional cabling.
Buried cable eventually becomes vulnerable to moisture, corrosion, shifting soil, damaged insulation, bad connectors, and the simple reality that anything left underground long enough can become difficult to troubleshoot.
That was exactly the kind of weakness you noticed when you were the person physically dealing with the equipment.
You were not standing at a desk looking at a diagram. You were climbing ladders, changing cables, securing lines, covering speakers, and trying to make a decades-old collection of systems work together long enough to get through another event.
The solution that kept occurring to me was not another temporary cable repair.
It was replacing the backbone.
Even around 2015, I remember discussing with the friend who brought me onto the job that fiber-optic cable and a modern network could have connected the major buildings around the estate.
I was not proposing that I personally arrive with a shovel and redesign the entire property. My role was not to perform the excavation or engineer the complete installation. My friend and I were looking at what the networking equipment and fiber portion of the job might involve.
The estimated technology cost was around $5,000 for a basic link.
The excavation would have been a separate expense, and that is not an insignificant part of the project. Heavy equipment, labor, conduit, locating existing utilities, protecting the cable, restoring the ground, and making sure the installation was done correctly would all cost money.
There were still several possible approaches.
If the original conduit or pathway remained usable, fiber might have been pulled through the existing route.
If it was damaged or unsuitable, the line could have been excavated and replaced.
Yes, that would temporarily disturb part of the property.
Yes, it might leave a visible trench until the ground and landscaping recovered.
But it would be a one-time disruption that created a much more capable communications backbone.
Once installed, fiber could support far more than event audio. It could provide networking between buildings, video distribution, security cameras, internet access, intercom systems, remote equipment control, monitoring, and future technologies that might not even have been part of the original plan.
Today, that same infrastructure could support networked audio, IP-based cameras, centralized production equipment, remote troubleshooting, and software such as OBS for distributing or recording video.
Instead of sending someone up a ladder repeatedly because another analog cable had failed, technicians could begin diagnosing at the network level and isolate problems much more quickly.
That experience taught me something I have carried through audio, IT, security, and contract work.
The equipment people notice is usually not the most important part of the system.
People notice the speakers.
They notice the mixing board.
They notice the cameras and screens.
They rarely notice the cable paths, conduits, switches, patch panels, network design, power distribution, grounding, or weather protection until one of those things fails.
Then suddenly the invisible infrastructure becomes the entire event.
I was not hired to redesign that estate’s audio system. I was hired to assist with the equipment and help get everything where it needed to be.
But sometimes being the person carrying the equipment gives you a clearer understanding of the system than the person who only sees it operating from a distance.
You learn quickly how many temporary solutions have become permanent.
You learn how many old habits remain in place because they worked well enough last year.
You also learn that there is a point where continuing to patch an aging system becomes more expensive, more aggravating, and less reliable than replacing the foundation beneath it.
Sometimes the smartest improvement is not another speaker or a newer mixer.
Sometimes it is making sure the next person does not have to climb the same ladder three times because nobody replaced the cable when they had the chance.
